Rugby – 1st XV finish on high at mid season break with GHK win

The 1st XV secured an important 10-6 win against promotion contenders GHK at Old Annielsland in the last fixture before the mid season Christmas and New Year break.

With an outstanding home match against Dumfries yet to be played things are tight at the top of National League 2 – GHK still lead with 41 points from an 8-3 win lose record, Kirkcaldy have the same 8-3 record and 41 points, Dumfries an 8-2 record and 40 points, while Stew Mel’s 8-2 record has yielded two fewer bonus points for 38 points so all to play for in the New Year. Next up is Newton Stewart on Saturday 11th January at Inverleith (2pm).

Rugby – Emphatic win for 1st XV

Saturday 23rd November

On a day of awful weather the 1st XV powered their way to an emphatic win over Hamilton with a display which belied the conditions, ultimately winning by 38-17. Having scored a pushover try to take the lead in the very first minute, apart from a spell in the first half when Hamilton seemed as though they might take control, this was as commanding a performance as any in the league season so far earning five points which leaves us within touching distance of the league leaders Dumfries who lost for a second week in a row.

Stew Mel’s sixth and final try

Rugby Sat 16th November – 1st XV win in Glasgow to maintain promotion challenge

Glasgow Academicals 8 Stewart’s Melville RFC 27

The 1st XV maintained their recent good run of results in National League 2 with a 27 – 8 win over Glasgow Academicals at New Anniesland on Saturday scoring four tries, two conversions and a penalty. The win puts them in 4th place on 33 points with a game in hand over the third and fourth placed teams, GHK (37 points) and Kirkcaldy (36 points). League leaders Dumfries (39 points) who we have beaten in the NL Cup lost their first league match of the season at home to Peebles 22-18.

Next Saturday, 23rd November we have a home match v Hamilton (kick off 2pm).

Mens Hockey – 1st XI win last match before winter break

Saturday 16th November

The ESM Mens 1st XI won the final match of the first half of the outdoor season defeating Aberdeen Grammar 2-0 at Rubislaw to go into the winter break in a satisfactory fourth place (out of 10 teams) on 15 points in the second tier of Scottish Mens Hockey with four wins, two defeats and three draws having won promotion from Division 3 last season. Inverleith and Dunfermline Carnegie lead the way each with 8 – 1 records for 24 points.

The outdoor league resumes on 29th February.

Rugby – Seven Try Cup Win for 1st XV

Saturday 26th October

The 1st XV produced their best form of the season to defeat unbeaten NL2 league leaders Dumfries by the convincing margin of 43 – 22 in the SRU’s National League Cup at Inverleith a week after a league match against the same opponents was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch.

Three first half tries took Stew Mel into a 19-3 lead and a further two early in the second half took the margin to 31-3 as the team continued to delight the sizable home support. Dumfries scored three tries in reply thereafter but never threatened the lead as Stew Mel added a further two of their own in between times. Altogether seven tries and four conversions in a great performance.

1st XV go down to Preston Lodge

Saturday 12th October

The 1st XV suffered a second league defeat of the season at Preston Lodge on Saturday losing by 25-19 in a game where they performed someway below expectations and after being helped into a half-time lead somewhat against the run of play by two PL errors leading to an interception try and a second when a defensive catch was missed under no pressure. PL were less gratuitous in the second half turning the match in their favour although some late Stew Mel pressure might have produced another score to close the gap.

This defeat leaves the team in sixth place on 18 points, five behind second placed Peebles. Next opponents Dumfries top the league with six wins out of six and 29 league points.

First league defeat for 1st XV

Saturday 21st September 2019

After opening the season’s national league 2 campaign with two wins the 1st XV entertained GHK for match day 3 ultimately losing by 44 – 19 with the visitors drawing away with three late tries as Stew Mel chased a fourth try and a game point.

GHK had started strongly putting on 17 points without reply in the first fifteen minutes as Stew Mel were denied possession before captain Fraser Morrison broke away to score a try unopposed.

GHK then added a further two tries to take a commanding lead of 29 – 7 into half-time. Thereafter Stew Mel had their best period in the match two forward tries taking them back to within ten points and offering some hope of getting back into the game within twenty minutes to go. Unfortunately it was not to be as the game opened up and GHK exploited the opportunities arising rather better.

Next week its on the road to Newton Stewart.
