Weekend Sport Saturday 5th May – Cricket

Stew Mel in the field against Heriot’s on Saturday

Mikey Miller top scored with 46

The Cricket Club took on last year’s League Champions Heriot’s on Saturday at Inverleith in the East Premier League.   Batting first after 33 overs the visitors were 93 for 5 having lost all their top order bats.   Remarkably Stew Mel in their reply had exactly the same score after 33 overs having recovered from the loss of four early wickets with Kris Steel and Mikey Miller getting the bulk of the runs.   The strength of Heriot’s lower order told however achieving a final score of 214 for 9 while Stew Mel subsided to 118 all out in the 43rd over.   Ryden LLP were the sponsors for the day.

On Thursday the 1st XI have a T20 Masterton Trophy match v Watsonians at Inverleith (6pm) and on Saturday a home league match v Forfarshire (12 noon).

Weekend Sport – Sat 28th April. Cricket – Opening league match

Back row: Alan Veitch (scorer); Kris Steele; Kyle McCallum; Hayden Sweet; Shaylen Pillay (professional); Greg Ruthven (captain); Front row: Adam McHoul; Tom Hilton; Michael Miller; David Sharkey; Greg Bissett. Absent – Chris Miller (w/k) still putting on his gloves.

League Season starts for club 1st XI.

The new league season started for the club’s 1st XI on Saturday at Arbroath.   Now playing under the Stewart’s Melville badge again the change in name didn’t change the team’s fortunes against Arbroath, league runners up of 2017.    Arbroath batting first accumulated 222 for 7 in their 50 overs considered no more than a par score for the day and reaching 50 without loss in 11 overs  the omens seemed bright for Stew Mel. Thereafter the self destruct mechanism kicked in leaving the side to contemplate a pretty miserly total of 91.   Hopes remain high and on Saturday we have our first home game (1pm) against last season’s champions Heriot’s.  We are looking forward to a few supporters coming along.

FP Membership 1972!

We have been fortunate enough to be gifted the membership card which belonged to Laurie Brown, back in 1972. Membership was the princely sum of £3 and each card was duly signed by Honorary Collector of Subscriptions Iain C S Gumley CA!

It got us thinking, what else was happening in the news n 1972?

  • Miners Strike against the Government
  • Edward Heath was Prime Minister
  • The CND were demonstrating
  • Willie Whitelaw was appointed as first Secretary of Northern Ireland
  • The final stretch of the M6 motorway opened between junctions 6 (Spaghetti Junction) and 7 north of Birmingham
  • Glasgow Rangers F.C. won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, defeating FC Dynamo Moscow
  • The Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Jesus Christ Superstar made its West End debut
  • The BBC quiz programme Mastermind was first broadcast
  • Gordon Banks, the England national football team goalkeeper, suffered a serious eye injury in a car crash in Staffordshire.

Inverleith preparing for Cricket & Athletics

Willie and his team have been working hard to prepare Inverleith for the upcoming cricket and athletic season.

Unfortunately, someone has forgotten to order the weather! Fingers crossed the dry weather makes a return and both cricket and athletic fixtures can go ahead.

London Club Dinner : 23 March 2018

The Annual Dinner of the London Branch was held on Friday, 23 March in the Caledonian Club.  Fifty-seven members and guests, including two tables of young FPs, ie under 40 years of age, attended the event – the largest turn-out for many years.

The evening was chaired by the President, Prof. Alastair Cormack, and the main speaker was the Principal, David Gray, who talked about how forthcoming legislation would impact on the independent schools in Scotland and why he thought that, with the right approach and careful management, ESMS should survive the hiatus.

At the end of the formal part of the proceedings, the Principal, who was accompanied by his wife Helene, was presented with a plaque to commemorate his retiral and to remind him of his association with the London Club over the last eighteen years.

National League Cup Semi-Final:    Kelso  7  Stewart’s Melville RFC    0

Following confirmation of relegation to NL2 the club’s cup run came to an end in a match producing a solitary score just before half-time.    On Saturday we meet Kelso again at Inverleith, 3pm in a league match postponed earlier but too late to effect our league position.   Summer’s just around the corner apparently !

Hockey:   No 1st XI action this past weekend but Mens 1s play Granite City  on Saturday.

Stew Mel cross for their 2nd try

Stew Mel on the charge

On Saturday we hosted a Gala team who had provided us with one of our three league wins this season.   On this occasion and 7-5 up at half-time the visitors always seemed to have the measure this time around although the opportunity to snatch an equalising try arose just before the final whistle.

Pre match lunch with guests Gregor Townsend and Roger Baird

Prior to the match with Gala a capacity attendance was privileged to attend a Q&A session with Scotland coach and ex Gala player Gregor Townsend led by Jim Calder.   In a revealing chat among other things Gregor told us what goes on in the coaches glass box at Murrayfield during international matches and also how he prepared Scotland for the second half v England in the recent match when they were already 22-6 ahead at half-time (pretty much leave well alone !).   Roger Baird, formerly of Kelso, Scotland and the British Lions entertained the gathering prior to the Q&A with a rendering of “dirty Gala” and an insight to a team meeting with legendary Scottish and Lions coach Jim Telfer.

Hockey:  While all this excitement was going on at Inverleith the Ladies 1s hockey team were at Tweedbank playing out a 3-3 draw with Fjordis Reivers.

Golf Club Dinner

The Annual Golf Club dinner took place in the clubhouse on Friday 23rd March.   Over seventy members and guests enjoyed the evening chaired by captain Adam Preedy.   Jim Robertson was a thoroughly entertaining guest speaker with stories from his work as a Procurator Fiscal throughout Scotland.
