Rugby Update – Saturday 15th January

Preston Lodge 20 Stewart’s Melville RFC 14

The 1st XV didn’t quite shake off the lethargy of the Christmas break on Saturday’s return to league rugby against Preston Lodge at Pennypit Park. An early try and conversion got our promotion push back on the road before PL hit back with a penalty kick and a converted try of their own (10-7 to the oppo). Just before half-time we regained the lead when PL handed us their own type of Christmas gift for an interception try and a 14-10 half-time lead. In a second half of stop start rugby on a very heavy playing surface PL got themselves another converted try for a 17-14 lead before Stew Mel lifted their game and thought they touched down for a try close to the posts to resume the lead. The referee thought otherwise and as both sides fought for the win it was secured by PL with a late penalty conversion (20-14). A rather disappointing display and outcome for the club but they hold onto second place in the league with a home game against Newton Stewart to come on Saturday (2pm).
