Rugby – Dumfries hang on to win vital promotion match

Late attempt to score falls short

12th March 2022 Stewart’s Melville RFC 21 Dumfries 27

This match finished in a disappointing defeat for the 1st XV in their bid for promotion from National League 2. The final plays of the match took place underneath the Dumfries posts but we were unable to breach their line and score the points needed to win this vital match. Things had gone well to start with with Stew Mel gaining an early advantage and a 10 point lead early in the match. Thereafter Dumfries gained a foothold in the match assisted by some untidy Stew Mel play giving up too many penalties and losing line outs but with a penalty we still led 13-12 at half-time and added another after to lead 16-12. Thereafter Dumfries pulled ahead with three tries to lead 27-16 despite having a player yellow carded during that period. A late try took us back within one score but despite threatening their line we were unable to get over for the opportunity to take the winning points.

Following this match we are on 63 points from 18 games with four to play (Gordonians, Hamilton, Glasgow Accies and Kirkcaldy). Dumfries have played 19 with three to play (Newton Stewart, leaders GHK and Kirkcaldy) and have 68 points so there is still a chance of catching them given our much superior points differential (64). A four try win gets you five points so every game hereon counts.
