Weekend Sport Sat 23 June – Cricket

Not a great day in terms of results for the Cricket Club – all four teams lost.   The 1st XI hosted unbeaten Grange who had five current or recent internationalists in their side in the East Premier League and without four regulars we chose to bat when the toss was won.    After reaching 39 for 1 with runs from Kris Steel (19) and Hayden Sweet (16) only Toby Hughes with 20 reached double figures and a final total of 86 in 37 overs was never enough to stretch our visitors who won for the loss of only one wicket.   The halfway point in the league has been reached with two wins achieved against Carlton and bottom placed team Glenrothes.    Saturday sees a visit from Arbroath who remain a strong team.

Farewell to David Gray

The FP Club gathered together on Tuesday evening to wish David Gray, whom after 18 years’ service is retiring as Principal of Erskine Stewart’s Melville Schools.

David, unsuspecting of the gathering and thought he was attending his last FP Council meeting, was met with a number of well kent faces, Presidents past and present, Council, affiliate and branch club members, as well as his beautiful wife Hélène. His surprise was evident!

Charles Wilson welcomed David to the gathering, followed by Ken Richards who spoke eloquently on the impact that David has had on the FP Club, injecting his particular brand of enthusiasm setting the standard for us to follow.  David, along with Ernie Wilkins, developed the Decadel system whereby schoolboys were able, through the generosity of their parents, to pay their membership fees for the Club, in advance, This has been extended into life membership and it now means that no schoolboy should have to leave the School without becoming a life member of the club.  There will always be a home for a former pupil at Inverleith.

Charles then presented David with a framed print of Inverleith Clubhouse, he also bestowed upon him life long membership of the FP Club thus ensuring there will always be a home at Inverleith for David and Hélène.

Weekend Sport Sat/Sun 16th/17th June – Cricket, Golf & Rugby.

Cricket:   The heavy showers which affected the East of Scotland on Saturday resulted in a complete washout of East Premier League fixtures.    Our 1st XIs match with Watsonians at Myreside was one of the last to be called off by the officiating umpires in mid afternoon after much hanging about and World Cup football watching.   The monotony was relieved by the splendid Myreside tea supplied by the catering division of Heart of Midlothian FC – even our teams Hibs supporters were seen going back for seconds.   The cancellation leaves the 1st XI in 8th place with two wins above Watsonians (one win) and Glenrothes (no wins).

Golf:  While the Word’s attention was focused on the US Open in New York our own Grant Forrest had another successful week on the European Challenge tour in France tieing for the lead after the regulation 72 holes of strokeplay.  Unfortunately he lost out in the play-off for the winners cheque at the third extra hole but the ranking points gained elevated him to 7th place where the top fifteen at the end of the season obtain playing privileges on the full European Tour.

Rugby: Scotland suffered a surprise defeat by USA in the second Test match of their Americas tour by the narrowest of margins 30-29.    The Stew Mel interest was provided by George Turner winning his 5th cap who started for the first time and added a further try to the three he scored v Canada last week.

Sports Day @ Inverleith | Saturday 23 June 2018

The School sports day is being held at Inverleith on Saturday 23 June 2018, starting at 9.30 am sharp.

The school would be extremely grateful if parents, staff and competitors could stay until the end of the medal presentations.  This would be greatly appreciated by everyone involved in the presentation ceremony and prizewinners

You can see a full copy of the running and racing order HERE!

Weekend Sport – Sat 9th June 2018. 3 Scotland Tries for George Turner

George Turner (SMC 2010) a member of the Scottish Rugby party touring the Americas at the moment not only came on as a 30th minute substitute at hooker for Scotland in Saturday’s (local time) international against Canada but scored three second half tries in an outstanding performance.   Scotland went on to win 48-10.   Reportedly George, now with Glasgow Warriers,  becomes just the third Scottish forward to score a hat-trick of tries for Scotland.   Having earned his first caps in last season’s Autumn internationals George then suffered an injury  which kept him out of contention for the Six Nations.  Congratulations !

Have any of our other Stew Mel internationalists scored three tries in one game playing for Scotland ?

Weekend Sport – Sat 9th June. Cricket – second league win for 1st XI

Cricket:    Glenrothes      163 all out;  Stewart’s Melville CC   164 for 5.

On what became a historic weekend for Scottish Cricket (Scotland defeated England at the Grange on Sunday) our 1st XI secured what for them was a significant second successive league win against Glenrothes on Saturday.

David’s Big Climb!

David Hourston has committed to an adventurous fundraising challenge for Children 1st! Please read his story below:

A few months ago, an email arrived in my inbox from, Children 1st, looking for people who would like to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for them. ‘Who on earth would want to do that?’, I thought to myself. However, the idea kind of stuck in my head and started to grow on me. So I met with one of the fundraising team from Children 1st and after finding out a bit more, I decided to sign up!

If you don’t know Children 1st, they used to be known as the Royal Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and they provide vital services to the country’s most disadvantaged, mistreated and vulnerable children. Some of the stories on the Children 1st website are heart breaking https://www.children1st.org.uk/ and they are as worthy a cause as I can think of.

I am paying my own travel and accommodation and so everything that I raise will go straight to Children 1st. I will leave Edinburgh on 20th September next year and fly out to Tanzania where it will take me 6 days climbing to get to the peak of the highest mountain in Africa. For me, this will be a huge challenge that will require a huge amount of preparation and training, which is well underway.

I attach a link to my just giving page and I would be extremely grateful to anyone that would like to sponsor me. Anything that you can give would be welcome.
