League Season starts for club 1st XI.

The new league season started for the club’s 1st XI on Saturday at Arbroath.   Now playing under the Stewart’s Melville badge again the change in name didn’t change the team’s fortunes against Arbroath, league runners up of 2017.    Arbroath batting first accumulated 222 for 7 in their 50 overs considered no more than a par score for the day and reaching 50 without loss in 11 overs  the omens seemed bright for Stew Mel. Thereafter the self destruct mechanism kicked in leaving the side to contemplate a pretty miserly total of 91.   Hopes remain high and on Saturday we have our first home game (1pm) against last season’s champions Heriot’s.  We are looking forward to a few supporters coming along.

FP Membership 1972!

We have been fortunate enough to be gifted the membership card which belonged to Laurie Brown, back in 1972. Membership was the princely sum of £3 and each card was duly signed by Honorary Collector of Subscriptions Iain C S Gumley CA!

It got us thinking, what else was happening in the news n 1972?

  • Miners Strike against the Government
  • Edward Heath was Prime Minister
  • The CND were demonstrating
  • Willie Whitelaw was appointed as first Secretary of Northern Ireland
  • The final stretch of the M6 motorway opened between junctions 6 (Spaghetti Junction) and 7 north of Birmingham
  • Glasgow Rangers F.C. won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, defeating FC Dynamo Moscow
  • The Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Jesus Christ Superstar made its West End debut
  • The BBC quiz programme Mastermind was first broadcast
  • Gordon Banks, the England national football team goalkeeper, suffered a serious eye injury in a car crash in Staffordshire.

Inverleith preparing for Cricket & Athletics

Willie and his team have been working hard to prepare Inverleith for the upcoming cricket and athletic season.

Unfortunately, someone has forgotten to order the weather! Fingers crossed the dry weather makes a return and both cricket and athletic fixtures can go ahead.

London Club Dinner : 23 March 2018

The Annual Dinner of the London Branch was held on Friday, 23 March in the Caledonian Club.  Fifty-seven members and guests, including two tables of young FPs, ie under 40 years of age, attended the event – the largest turn-out for many years.

The evening was chaired by the President, Prof. Alastair Cormack, and the main speaker was the Principal, David Gray, who talked about how forthcoming legislation would impact on the independent schools in Scotland and why he thought that, with the right approach and careful management, ESMS should survive the hiatus.

At the end of the formal part of the proceedings, the Principal, who was accompanied by his wife Helene, was presented with a plaque to commemorate his retiral and to remind him of his association with the London Club over the last eighteen years.

National League Cup Semi-Final:    Kelso  7  Stewart’s Melville RFC    0

Following confirmation of relegation to NL2 the club’s cup run came to an end in a match producing a solitary score just before half-time.    On Saturday we meet Kelso again at Inverleith, 3pm in a league match postponed earlier but too late to effect our league position.   Summer’s just around the corner apparently !
