Rugby
The Rugby Club took the weekend honours with the 1st XV confounding even their most loyal supporters by turning around a 24 point deficit to defeat Gala 31-24 at Netherdale on Saturday. The win takes the 1sts above Musselburgh in the league and within catching distance of Cartha QP and Kelso.

On Saturday the 1st XV are at home to Selkirk (kick-off 2pm) with a pre match lunch beforehand. All support welcome !
Hockey
The Hockey Club had less to cheer about their 1st Mens team going down 5-1 to Aberdeen Grammar although their Ladies 1sts returned a 2-2 draw with Inverleith.
Rugby: Relief for the 1st XV and supporters at Inverleith with a 41-17 win over bottom of the league Falkirk. A full report will appear on the Rugby Club’s website. On Saturday the 1sts face a tough match away to third placed Gala, 3pm at Netherdale.
Hockey: The Mens 1s had a weekend off but a match was played against Dutch opposition from Groningen which ended with a 4-3 win for the visitors. They seemed to enjoy Denise’s lagers in the clubhouse afterwards. The Ladies 1s lost out 5-2 to Edinburgh University in Round 2 of the Scottish Cup.
Quiz question – Who is the last former pupil to have won on the International pitch at Murrayfield ? Answer – Promising footballer Euan Henderson who left SMC in June played the last twenty minutes in Hearts 1-0 win over St Johnstone on Saturday and played a part in the lead up to the winning goal.

Doddie’s Day
Edinburgh Rugby Oldies Society (EROS) held an emotional yet entertaining lunch at Inverleith yesterday in support of former pupil Doddie Weir who has been diagnosed with Motor Nueron Disease. The usual full house was royally entertained by Doddie, ably supported by Scott Hastings, with amusing tales of rugby from their playing days. At the conclusion a cheque in the sum of £2,500 was presented to Doddie’s Trust and a separate cheque for £1,000 presented to the Euan MacDonald Centre for MND Research.
